Belle Isle was once a small hamlet near to Middleton Woods. Houses in the hamlet were built in the 1790s by the Brandling family and this is where the workers of Middleton Colliery lived.
After nearly 200 years, the houses were eventually demolished in the 1950s due to subsidence.
